Become an artist!

Contrary to popular opinion, anyone can be an artist! Each of us has almost everything we need to do so. The problem is most people don’t realize that although anyone CAN be an artist not everyone is willing to dedicate the hours of hard work and practice necessary to become an artist.

Malcolm Gladwell summed up what was needed to become an expert in his “10,000 hour rule,” Gladwell’s principle holds that 10,000 hours of “deliberate practice” are needed to become world-class in any field. Not everyone agrees, but in my experience as an artist and a teacher, there is something to be said about the importance of many many hours of deliberate practice.

Besides deliberate practice, I would add that one not succumb to the belief that the artist practices only when he/she happens to be in the mood. There are many days I wake up wanting to do something else besides making art. I wholly agree with Einstein when he said, “99 hours of perspiration and 1 hour of inspiration.” I have found that if I am not doing the work, nothing is going to happen whereas if I am working, I have a chance of getting near to the results I am aiming for.

I wish there was some “magic formula” I could pass on to tell you how to become an artist without doing the work, but as with all areas in life, no one gets to where they want to go without putting in the hard work and sweat necessary to get there. The good news is that it is never too late to begin . . . Get started now on becoming the artist you have always wanted to be. Take trips to museum shows to learn about art, take a course in art history, sign up for an art class. . .
